Every piece of marble, granite, or limestone that makes up one of Gnosis Tesserae’s custom-designed mosaics is cut by hand. Clients may choose to have Gnosis create an original mosaic for their project or to alter a stock design. “Our task is to get into the customer’s mind and see what they’re trying to accomplish with the overall design,” says Eduardo Esparza, U.S. head of design and marketing. Esparza says Italian, French, and English Renaissance-style mosaics are popular but that many clients are also looking for contemporary work to fit into more urban dwellings. The company’s goal is to make it easy to source custom mosaics. Most mosaics are mesh-mounted for ease of installation, but for a less precise effect, tesserae can be mounted face-down on paper for installation. And for the truly authenticity-minded, custom mosaics can be executed on-site—the Lebanon-based company will send a team from the Middle East to complete the installation in the client’s home.
