By Carolyn Weber. On October 31, 2002, in Las Vegas, the Urban Land Institute announced its annual Awards for Excellence winners. Picked from more than 100 entries, the winners were evaluated on financial feasibility, resourceful use of land, design, relevance to contemporary issues, and sensitivity to the community and environment. The winner for new residential community was Summerlin North, in Las Vegas, developed by the Howard Hughes Corp. The multi-generational community, with 24,025 residential units (all price ranges) is situated on 7,360 acres, with views to the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area. This community has ranked as the nation’s best-selling master planned community nine of the past 10 years. For a complete list of winners, visit www.uli.org.
