Creating a kitchen that is at once minimal and functional sounds like an exercise in opposing philosophies, but this one manages to pull it off. Designed as an open pavilion, the main workspace features furniture-style cabinetry and is noticeably devoid of the usual heavy-duty culinary equipment. Waist-high appliances such as the oven and dishwasher are discreetly hidden behind the island, while taller units—the fridge, wine storage, and microwave—are tucked into a pantry alcove around the corner.

Generous use of local materials and custom work by local artisans gave this handsome space a unique flavor and also helped the overall house garner a North Carolina Healthy Built Home bronze rating. Homegrown features include a blackened steel backsplash, custom lighting fixtures, a natural walnut island countertop, and wormy chestnut cabinets.
