On a sunny afternoon in October I paid a visit to The Crib, a prototype building by local Rockville, Md., architect Jeffery Broadhurst, AIA. This 260-square foot project can be used as a home or outbuilding, and has an additional 140 square feet of deck space. It’s been built for public viewing on the campus of Strathmore, an 11-acre nonprofit organization that includes the William Rawn Associates-designed Music Center at Strathmore. The Crib will remain on the site until June 2013.
It’s always nice to see a space built after writing about it from an On the Boards angle (see my story on The Crib in the 2011 Custom Home Design Awards). The home feels spacious, thanks in part to the canted walls that gain about 3 extra feet of space on both sides of the building. Traditional American corn cribs inspired the project’s design, but instead of a corn crib’s open-air slatted walls, these walls are sheathed in translucent insulating multi-layer polycarbonate sheets. The strategy results in great daylighting, both in the downstairs main living space and the upstairs loft bedroom. Here’s a link to info and photos on Broadhurst’s website.
