Mount Pleasant, S.C.

1 MIN READ

IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C., consisted of a four-mile-long street, nine stores, a sawmill, and a brick factory. Its proximity to Charleston made it a convenient pleasure and health resort for the city’s residents; most visitors made the trip there by steam ferry. The little town has since grown exponentially, yet it retains its quaint seaside ambience. The Old Village is where its history is most evident, boasting antebellum homes, churches, and shops. And although visitors now arrive by car, an afternoon sipping ice cream sodas at the Pitt Street Pharmacy and gazing at the panoramic view of the harbor may transport them to the Mount Pleasant of a century ago.
