By Nigel F. Maynard The angular plan of this 5,000-square-foot house takes advantage of its siting on a spherical, cul-de-sac lot.
“It narrows at the front of the house but fans out at the back,” says architect R. Doug Mansfield, noting several efficiencies of the floor plan. Because of this configuration, a setback private motor court became possible. The location reduces visibility from the street and allows easier vehicular access.
Designed for the luxury move-up buyer, the home needed all the amenities that a custom homeowner would expect. As a result, exterior detailing and materials selection became paramount.
The architect chose brick and stone veneer, smooth stucco, clay roof tiles, and wrought-iron detail work.
“We intentionally made the houses look different from each other to reinforce the custom concept,” Mansfield explains. The homes cost from about $1.5 to $1.7 million.
