Northern Fires

By Christina B. Farnsworth. National news focus has been on fires in the Southwestern and Western United States, but Quebec is burning too. As Builder went to press, some 45 forest fires initiated by lightning had already raged through more than 100,000 acres in the Canadian province. A milky haze fanned by northern winds delayed some airline traffic as it spread across New England, New York state, and even as far south as Washington. John Quinlan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., reports that “many people have actually begun to smell the smoke in faraway places.”
