Women from across the construction industry have come together on what is believed to be the first home in the nation built by an all-female skilled labor team. “The House That SHE Built,” a 3,200-square-foot home project in Saratoga Springs, Utah, broke ground in September with framing started in mid-November. The home is set to be unveiled at the 2021 Utah Valley Parade of Homes, according to the Utah chapter of the NAHB’s Professional Women in Building.
Many of the home’s materials have been donated or provided at cost, and proceeds from the sale of the home will be divided between scholarships for women pursuing construction management or trade, women-run charities, educational events for young girls about employment opportunities in home building, and the funding of future home projects.
The team is looking for additional skilled tradeswomen interested in joining the project in December, including electricians, plumbing professionals, and HVAC professionals; sponsors are ready to pay for airfare and accommodations for those interested.
“Our goal is to help women and girls realize that there is a place for them in home building, and that there are so many different opportunities here,” said primary general contractor Kristi Allen, the 2020 Utah PWB Chair and a builder for WoodCastle Homes LLC in Alpine, Utah. Allen, a third-generation Utah home builder, said she has been blown away by the excitement and support from the local community.
