Private Residence

A FLUENT TRANSLATION OF JAPANESE style is precisely what architect Stephen Muse brought to his design of the interior of this home. Muse used bare maple for trim, columns, and beams to make subtle references to classic Japanese architecture. A lower-level tatami room (a room with natural grasslike mats on the floors) is the only traditional Japanese space in the house. For the home’s exterior, Muse employed a simple shingle design that complements the clean-lined interior while blending in with the wooded surroundings.
