“God is in the details,” said legendary architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. This custom home off the coast of Hilton Head, S.C., isn’t exactly his style—it’s low-country, not modern—but the sentiment still rings true. Home-spun touches abound, and some even bring an element of surprise to utilitarian spaces that are normally overlooked.

Vintage armoires provided the inspiration for the handcut, ratcheted shelving detail in this kitchen pantry, which came to life with a few napkin sketches and a table saw. The movable shelving was cut from the same Eastern white pine used on all the interior trim in the house.

The homeowners worked meticulously with architect Rick Clanton, builder Tom Dickinson, and cabinetmaker Stephen Litchfield to create a home that is anything but run-of-the-mill.
