GRAND—Best kitchen in a single-family detached remodeled home—3,000 to 5,000 square feet GALLEY KITCHENS HAVE their proponents, but just about any homeowner who has expanded beyond the constraints of this classic plan ends up relishing the new sense of freedom that an open kitchen imparts. That was definitely the case when the owner of this 1950s modern home expanded the existing structure’s living space. Now there would be elbow room in the new kitchen, whose clean, rigid lines correspond to the nature of the existing and renovated home.

The clipped lines of the Siematic cabinets go a long way toward furthering a sleek look, as do the Cambria quartz counter-tops. Touches of wood help warm up the room.

An abundance of light coming from the clerestory windows also helps take the edge off what could be a cold and impersonal space. “They’re actually in the hallway behind the kitchen, in an existing space,” says architect Jeff Lindgren. In-floor radiant heat was installed beneath the Metallo Collection recycled rubber flooring from Luxica. “That helps make it a very comfortable room,” says Lindgren.
