Teaching Trades to Share Space

Coordinating trade partners can be one of a builder’s most challenging tasks. In complex rooms such as the bathroom, it’s easy for framers, plumbers, and electricians to get in one another’s way.

1. Tight Spaces The stud bays behind the vanity sink have to hold plumbing, wiring, and even a medicine cabinet. Instruct your framers, plumbers, and electricians just how things should be laid out.

2. Center the Framing Make sure the framers center a stud bay behind the sink, so it’s easy for the plumber to locate water supply lines and drains.

3. Plan for the Vent If there’s a medicine cabinet over the sink, remind the plumber to run his vent one bay to the side. Don’t let the vent interfere with electrical boxes either.
